Join us for a special hybrid two-part Levy Lecture series with author and linguistics professor Judith Levi, presented in person in Bobby’s Room at the Levy Senior Center and online via Zoom on March 5 and March 12 at 3:30 pm. On March 5, Professor Levi will explore universal identity issues at the heart of conflicts around the world, using her experience in German-Jewish dialogue and reconciliation. On March 12, Professor Levi will examine the nature and inherent challenges of reconciliation and forgiveness, including how identity issues affect reconciliation readiness. In celebration of Black History Month, the LSCF is proud to present Alice’s Ordinary People, a documentary by Evanston filmmaker Craig Dudnick. Join us in person in Bobby’s Room at the Levy Senior Center on Thursday, February 26, at 3:00 pm for a special film screening and discussion with the filmmaker. The film tells the story of Chicago area activist Alice Tregay, whose life and work reflect the story of the Civil Rights Movement and emphasize the essential work of "ordinary people" affecting extraordinary change for human rights. Discover the benefits and risks of GLP-1 medications with Dr. Allison Shimmel on Thursday, February 26, at 1:30 pm in the Levy Senior Center Library. In this presentation, Dr. Shimmel will explain the basic pathophysiology of GLP-1 medications, explore their current benefits, and review potential risks, particularly for older adults. She will also share insights into ongoing research and what may be coming next in the world of GLP-1 treatments. This in-person program is free to attend, but registration is required. The LSCF and Northlight Theatre are partnering to offer two virtual spring writers’ workshops: a 6-class Creative Writing Workshop and a 6-class Playwriting Workshop. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting, these workshops are designed to support and inspire you. At the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to submit a piece of their writing for inclusion in the seasonal High Lights Booklet. Designed to help you create calmer, more functional living spaces, this program offers practical strategies and personalized solutions tailored to your organizing challenges and goals. Held in person on Mondays, March 2, March 16, and March 30 at 2:00 pm in the Library at the Levy Senior Center, participants are encouraged to bring questions, photos, or examples of spaces they would like help organizing. Love card games, classic word games, and spending time with others in a relaxed, social setting? Stop by for one game or stay for the morning to enjoy Open Games. Open Games will take place every Thursday, beginning January 29, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Elm Room at the Levy Senior Center. Drop in to enjoy a variety of games, including Scrabble, Uno, Mahjongg (don’t forget to bring your own cards), and other card games. Whether you come with a favorite game in mind or want to try something new, all experience levels and games are welcome! No registration is required—drop in and join the fun!
Are you interested in talking with young people? Talking Benches, an opportunity to engage in intergenerational conversations, is returning! The program will be held at the Levy Senior Center in the Elm Room on the following Tuesdays: Feb. 24, March 10, March 24, and April 21, from 4:15 to 5:30 pm. Older adults will be paired with high school students who will come prepared with a list of questions; be prepared with your own list as well! Each conversation will last about 30 minutes before participants rotate. The students are eager to hear about your life! Registration is closed.
Do you enjoy word games in a fun and collaborative setting? The LSCF is continuing Bring Back Scrabble with Sarah Serota. Levy Senior Center members will bond through games of speed, strategy, and skill with tile-based word games such as Scrabble and Bananagrams – no expertise is needed!. The program will be held in Craft Room B at the Levy Senior Center on Fridays from 1:30 – 3:00 pm, with the first session beginning on January 9 - end date to be determined. Registration is closed.
Join fellow Levy Senior Center member Sharon Meyers on Thursday, March 5, at 1:30 pm in the Levy Senior Center Library for the Levy Special Event: How Living and Learning in Kyoto Can Inspire Us All, where she’ll share highlights from her inspiring journey studying under master sensei in Kyoto and how this journey led to the creation of her two published books: White Tiger Tales and Kiku's Vase & The Shogun's Bowl — A Tale of Kintsugi. The LSCF’s Levy Lecture: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying with Juniper Viernes is now available to watch on the Levy Senior Center Foundation’s YouTube channel. With a Broadway premiere in 1961 and multiple revivals since, How to Succeed tells the story of Finch, an ambitious young window-washer. Armed with a helpful handbook on success, Finch makes his way to the top of the corporate ladder in no time. Interested in learning Mahjongg? Enter our lottery for a chance to join this fun, stimulating, and social journey into the world of Mahjongg! Over five engaging sessions, you’ll learn the rules, strategies, and rhythms of this classic tile game. Each class builds on the last, so it’s essential to attend all five, especially the first one, when we cover the fundamentals. The classes will be held at the Levy Senior Center on the following Thursdays: 2/19, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, and 3/19 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Need help utilizing FaceTime or Zoom, scanning QR codes, organizing and sharing your photos, downloading apps, sending emails, or even navigating patient care portals and hospital websites? Tech Tuesdays can help you with a variety of issues you may be experiencing. The Levy Senior Center, in partnership with the LSCF, continues to offer appointments for free tech support and training to help you feel more comfortable with your devices. To make an appointment for a 30-minute session in the Levy Senior Center library, call the front desk at (847) 448-8250 today. Appointments are available Tuesdays 1:00 - 3:00 pm.
